The Nigerian Government has now launched the Nigeria Energy Transition Strategy and made it clear that the landscape of Nigeria’s energy is changing for the good of all Nigerians and Africans. This is a pivotal moment in the economic growth of Nigeria and one in which the Oilserv group plans to fully participate. The strategy has stated goals of achieving universal energy access by 2030 and a carbon-neutral economy by 2060.
The road ahead will be challenging but the rewards of succeeding will be far greater. Imagine a Nigeria without diesel generators; with clean air; a competitive manufacturing base; with power available across the country to over 200 million people. Imagine a Nigeria where our children have great prospects and do not grow up wanting to leave for a better life.
So, how does Oilserv fit in with this idyllic dream? Let us examine the new PURPOSE of Oilserv.
ACCELERATING THE ENERGY TRANSITION: This describes the change and growth in energy that will occur in the coming years and how Oilserv will play a major part in that. Firstly, in growing gas use in all of its forms; LNG, CNG, LPG, and Natural Gas will all play a part in Nigeria’s future.
Natural Gas is a cheap and clean fuel when compared to diesel:
- 20-30% less CO2 emissions
- 99% less Sulphur Dioxide
- No heavy metals or soot
- 80% less Nitrogen Oxide
Nigeria is blessed with an abundance of natural gas but unfortunately very little gas infrastructure so the majority of gas produced is exported through Nigeria LNG. Oilserv projects including AKK, OB3, and others are the start of the Nigerian gas revolution and we want to aggressively grow that position to be a major player in every part of the gas value chain.
The emerging renewable energy market will also expand throughout Nigeria. Renewables generally involve wind, solar, Bioenergy, Geothermal, and Hydropower. Creating renewable energy is one thing but storing and transporting it is quite another. The lack of an efficient electricity grid will hamper renewable efforts on a large scale but will still offer opportunities. Green Hydrogen is one of those and in the long term, I expect Nigeria to have a significant renewable power infrastructure.
To accelerate the Energy Transition, Oilserv will need to be able to mobilize on multiple projects simultaneously, deliver projects under budget and ahead of schedule, and possibly expand into operating and maintaining complex plants. This will take more and better trained & skilled people, improved processes, and a culture of continuous improvement. It promises to be an exciting journey.
IMPROVING AFRICAN LIVES: Access to clean and affordable energy is very important for the well-being of African people as well as for economic development which will pull many millions out of poverty. In Nigeria, a lower-cost energy base will lead to Industry growth and Job creation, cleaner energy will lead to healthier living.
Everyone wants the best for their family but not everyone has the opportunity to go to work every day and say they are working to improve the lives of all Nigerians. In Oilserv, you can hold your head high and say that you are doing that with your contribution to the energy transition. You should be very proud of this.
When someone asks why you work for Oilserv, remember to tell them it is because you want to accelerate the energy transition and improve Africa for the good of their children!
How will you play your part in Accelerating the Energy Transition; Improving African lives?
